Remove fake McAfee pop-ups
Stop Browser Notifications
- For Chrome:
- Go to
chrome://settings/notifications
. - In the “Allowed to send notifications” section, find any suspicious websites, click the three dots next to them, and select Block or Remove.
- Go to
- For Edge:
- Open Edge settings and navigate to Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > Notifications.
- Find the offending site in the “Allowed” list and click the three dots to Block or Remove it.
- For Safari:
- Open Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Websites.
- In the sidebar, click Notifications, select the problematic site, and click Deny.
Disable System-Wide Notifications (Windows)
- Open Windows Settings (Right-click the Start icon, then select Settings).
- Go to System > Notifications.
- Scroll through the list of apps and turn off notifications for any suspicious programs, including McAfee.
Clean Up Your Browser and System
- Clear Browser Data: Open your browser’s settings and go to the “Clear browsing data” section. Select All time for the time range, and clear cache and cookies to remove malicious data.
- Remove Suspicious Extensions: In your browser’s settings, find the “Extensions” or “Add-ons” section. Disable or remove any unknown or suspicious extensions, particularly those related to McAfee.
- Run an Antivirus Scan: Use a reputable antivirus program like Malwarebytes Free to scan your computer for any malware or unwanted programs that may be causing the pop-ups.
- Check Startup Programs: Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Startup apps tab, and disable any unfamiliar programs that launch when your computer starts.
- Reset Browser Settings: In your browser’s settings, find the option to reset all settings to their default.
