NTFS folder permissions allowing specific user access while denying others access
To give folder access to one user while denying it to another in Windows, right-click the folder, go to Properties > Security, and then click Edit or Advanced to modify permissions. You will then need to disable inheritance from the parent folder to set unique permissions. After that, you can Add specific users, grant them only the necessary permissions (like Read, Write, or Full Control), and then click Apply to save the changes.
Steps to Set Folder Permissions
- Right-click: the desired folder and select Properties.
- Navigate to the Security tab.
- Click the Edit button to change permissions or Advanced to disable inheritance.
- If disabling inheritance: In the Advanced Security Settings, click Disable inheritance and choose to convert or remove inherited permissions.
- To add a user, click Add.
- Type the username in the “Enter the object names to select” box, click Check Names, then OK to confirm.
- Select the user and check the desired permissions (e.g., Full Control, Read, Write).
- Click Apply and then OK to save the changes.
To Deny Access to a User
- Follow steps 1-4 above to get to the Advanced Security Settings.
- In the Advanced Security Settings, under the “Permission entries” list, you can find and select the users or groups you want to remove.
- Click Remove to deny access.
