Finding the owner of a GUID –

A Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) lookup is the process of searching a system, database, or directory (like Active Directory or Azure Entra ID) to find the specific object, user, or application tied to a 128-bit identification string. Because GUIDs are random, you must look them up inside the specific environment where they were created.

How to Look Up a GUID

Cloud and Directory Services

  • Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD: Paste the ID directly into the global “Search your tenant” search bar at the top of the portal dashboard to resolve whether it belongs to a user, group, or application registration.
  • Active Directory: Use directory management tools or PowerShell commands (like Get-ADObject -Filter {ObjectGUID -eq 'your-guid-here'}) to query the object schema.

Windows and Local Systems

  • Windows Registry: Open regedit and use Edit > Find to search for the specific text string or interface key if you are tracking down COM objects or component GUIDs.
  • Disk Partitions: Open a command prompt, launch diskpart, select your target disk, and run unique id disk to query volume or disk signatures
